2 ½ years ago, I got a dog that came from a bad home. When I brought him home at
6 months old he was so aggressive that he immediately wanted to be the dominant
male over my other two males that were 8 and 10 years old. At one point he
actually became violently aggressive and a major problem. He seemed to be an
untrainable dog.
He lost house privileges and was moved outside to a heated dog house. First thing he did was eat the flap off the dog house, then he amazingly got to the wiring and ate the power cord for the heat. Then he begun eating all the trees and barking out of control. When let out, he would go find animal waste and roll in it, both sides and neck! The great mystery of how to stop dog barking arose.
I was beginning to dislike this untrainable barking dog problem, as it seemed he truly hated me. No matter how thick of flap I put on the doghouse, he would tear it off. He is a Boxer and their strength is overwhelming. He would bark all day in the kennel. Out of desperation I tried a muzzle which lasted 2 minutes. I don’t advise a muzzle for a untrainable barking dog. He tore it off and ate it.
Then
I started thinking, he needs a job, a busy dog is better than a barking
dog any day. So I put him to work. I started training the simple
commands with hand signals and vocal. When he would do well, I would praise him.
He learned how to sit, shake, lay down and rollover in under 10 minutes. He had
never been worked with before! He was brilliant, I was amazed how smart he was.
I discontinued the rollover because he would do it so fast I was concerned about
him twisting his stomach. The untrainable dog problem was put to
rest
He really liked the praise thing and become quite eager to please me. His overall behavior started improving a lot. I found that the barking dog problem was a lot to do with jealousy of the other dogs. However, his doghouse still has no flap, and he still has an occasional double sided roll in poop. But he is really sorry for doing it. I guess it is like trying to quit smoking for him.
At three years old, he has become the most loving Boxer dog I have ever owned. He is perfectly behaved on our rode trips. He will even stop chasing cats on command. I am glad I stuck with it. The how to stop dog barking problem has been resolved.
Our road was a long and very stressful one. I wish now I would have gotten professional help though. I see the way true dog handlers do stuff, and it makes me think of the time and mistakes I could have saved myself. I sure love that dog now, but I think he loves me even more!
